RESEARCH IN NATURAL MEDICINE
The physicians at Seattle Integrative Medicine (SIM) are committed to the evolution of medicine through the scientific evaluation of emerging therapies. As well as pursuing pilot research investigations through Seattle Integrative Medicine, Drs. Mischley, Standish, Holder and Sexton are working in collaboration with other prominent institutions such as the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to evaluate therapies for the prevention and treatment of chronic and life-threatening diseases. Current areas of research focus at SIM include neurological diseases, multiple sclerosis, type II diabetes, environmental medicine and hepatitis C.

RESEARCH IN MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
Dr. Sexton is a clinical researcher at the University of Washington in the Department of Pharmacology. She is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from the division of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) as the Principal Investigator in the study of the effects of a common nutritional supplement on novel inflammation markers in Multiple Sclerosis.

If you would like more information regarding her study, or would like to be considered as a subject in the study please contact her at: msexton@u.washington.edu | http://depts.washington.edu/stellalb/index.shtml

Her past/current projects include:
  • Selected phyto-chemicals' effect on immune cell migration
  • Endocannabinoids as immune markers in Multiple Sclerosis patients
  • Ellagic Acid content in Punica granatum,Texas Tech University
  • Ellagic Acid content in Rubus Idaeus, Bastyr University
  • Assay development for Neuroinflammation. Bastyr University, University of Washington, Vanderbilt University
  • Lignan content in Schisandra chinensis, Bastyr University

RESEARCH FOCUSING ON NEUROLOGICAL DISEASES
Dr. Laurie Mischley has made the evaluation of alternative therapies for neurological diseases a focus of her practice. There are hundreds of studies demonstrating that patients with Parkinson's disease have lower levels of the important antioxidant glutathione. The evaluation of glutathione as a treatment in Parkinson's is a critical area of research. Dr. Mischley is co-investigator with prominent Seattle neurologists in a proposed study to evaluate the use of glutathione in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Dr. Mischley is an adjunct faculty member at Bastyr University and trains future doctors in the use of alternative laboratory diagnostics in naturopathic medical practice.

RESEARCH IN HEPATITIS C
Dr. Standish is Senior Research Scientist and the former Director of the Bastyr University Research Institute. Trained at the Downstate Medical Center in New York and the University of Massachusetts, Dr. Standish received her neuroscience doctoral degree in 1978 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in psychopharmacology at Emory University in 1979-1980. Prior to her work in natural medicine research, she served for two years as Visiting Scientist and Senior Fellow at the University of Washington's Department of Physiology and Biophysics.

With a 25-year career as a research scientist with numerous publications and appointments, Dr. Standish has a commitment to the evaluation of natural therapies within the scientific paradigm. Currently, Dr. Standish is principal investigator on several research projects in the areas of hepatitis C, immunity and mind/body interaction. Dr. Standish has recently received a faculty appointment at the University of Washington.
